Brains Rev. James ales are named in honour of the Reverend James Buckley saver of souls and satisfier of thirsts.
Based on a recipe from 1885 and brewed in honour of the legendary James Buckley who took over the Llanelli brewery in 1824 The Rev. James Original has a mellow malty flavour that unexpectedly gives way to a clean, refreshing finish. Brewed using our exclusive Buckleys’ yeast this award winning ale will save your soul and satisfy your thirst.
Bitter, ABV 4.5%
Rev. James is a deep reddish-brown in colour and pours with a thick foamy head. The aroma is of sweet, biscuity malt followed by some fruit flavours, including raisins.
The taste is of fruit and sweetness followed by a bittersweet finish with caramel overtones towards the end.
A lasting taste of sweet malt and spicy hops lingers on the tongue to provide a smooth and well-balanced finish.
Brewery History
Originally, Brains beers were brewed in the Old Brewery on St Mary Street from 1882 right up to 1999 when operating from such a tight city-centre site became unviable. Fortunately, the Cardiff Brewery behind Cardiff Central station was up for sale and Brains production moved to a new home. However exciting new redevelopments in the centre of the city have led to a further move. Specifically, this was the building of the brand new state of the art Dragon Brewery in Cardiff Bay which was opened by HRH the Duke of Cambridge in March 2019.
The Dragon Brewery is a multi-million-pound investment that can produce more than 20 million pints of Brains beer a year. These are across a variety of different beer styles, while meeting the very latest environmental standards. It is a clear example of Brains’ continuing commitment to brewing in the heart of the nation’s capital.
